The subject of this air is the celebrated Patrick Delany,D.D. (c. 1685-1768), Professor of Oratory in Dublin University and afterwards Dean of Down. He was the intimate friend of Swift and Sheridan, and Arthur O'Neill tells us in his memoirs that he 'delighted in Carolan'.. It was under his patronage that a collection of Carolan's music was published in 1747.
