A story is told that Carolan recognized Bridget Cruise by the touch of her hand after an interval of 20 years. This was on the shores of Lough Derg in Donegal, where both accidentally met while on a pilgrimage to St. Patrick's Purgatory. Not knowing it was her, at first, he helped her into the boat.
