Ó Raghallaigh - O'Reilly of Athcarne

O'Reilly
O'Reilly Family Crest

The tune is attributed to Carolan by Hudson, apparently on the authority of Edward O'Reilly, who is in general a reliable judge on matters relating to the composer. But whether this piece is authentic is open to some question. Its opening phrases recall the folk-air called "The Cruiskeen Lawn', the earliest printed versions of which are in Playford's dancing master, 17th edition, vol ii (1728), p. 121. Again the appropriate words are not by Carolan (as we would expect if he composed the tune), but by the Meath poet Uilliam Ó Ciaráin (William Kearns). ... O'Sullivan 2024 1 vol. edition p. 273.
