The bible mentions nine ranks or choirs of Angels. The angels shown
below are in descending order from the highest rank to the lowest. The
most numerous are simply angels. There are more sightings of them
in the bible than we can mention here.
The most common misconception about angels is that we become an angel
when we die. Though it makes for a nice story, it is simply not
true. Angels differ from us, just as we differ from the dogs and
other animals that we love.
God's word describes His angels as messengers, mighty warriors, and
guides. He used them to appear to Hagar, Mary and Joseph, Daniel,
John, Paul, and numerous others throughout the Scriptures.
The listing of the Nine Angelic Choirs for angels was developed by a
theologian in the sixth century named Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite
in the book "Celestial Hierarchy" and was endorsed and accepted by
Thomas Aquinas in Summa Theologica in the thirteenth century. They
are found in the bible. The names of the choirs are:
Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Powers, Principalities,
Archangels, and simply Angels

Ard-aingil, Aingil

The first Choir of Angels: the Seraphim.
|
These are the highest order or choir of angels. They are the angels
who are attendants or guardians before God's throne. They praise
God, singing, "Holy Holy Holy is the Lord of Hosts". the only Bible
reference is Isaiah 6:1-7 In Holy Writ these angelic beings are
distinctly mentioned only in Isaiah's description of his call to the
prophetical office (Isaiah 6:2 sqq.). In a vision of deep spiritual
import, granted him in the Temple, Isaiah beheld the invisible
realities symbolized by the outward forms of God's dwelling
place, of its altar, its ministers, etc. While he stood gazing
before the priest's court, there arose before him an august vision
of God sitting on the throne of His glory. On each side of the
throne stood mysterious guardians, each supplied with six wings: two
to bear them up, two veiling their faces, and two covering their
feet, now naked, as became priestly service in the presence of the
Almighty. His highest servants, they were there to minister to Him
and proclaim His glory, each calling to the other: "Holy, holy,
holy, God of hosts; all the earth is full of His glory." These
were seraphim, one of which flew towards Isaiah bearing a live coal
which he had taken from the altar, and with which he touched and
purified the Prophet's lips, that henceforth these might be
consecrated to the utterances of inspiration.
Isaiah 6:1

The second highest choir of Angels: the Cherubim.
|
The Cherubim rank after the seraphim and are the second highest in the
nine hierarchies or choirs of angels. They were closely linked in
God's glory. They are manlike in appearance and double-winged and
were guardians of God's glory. The bible references them in
Genesis 3:23.
Genesis 3:23.
(3:23) Uime sin dhíbir an Tiarna Dia as gairdín éidin é chun an talamh as ar
tógadh é a shaothrú.

(3:23) The Lord God therefore banished him (Adam) from the garden of Eden, to till
the ground from which he had been taken.

(3:24) When he expelled the man, he settled him east of the garden of Eden;

Choir 3, 4, 5, 6 7: The Thrones, Dominations, Virtues,
Principalities, and Powers.

God creates the thrones, Dominations, Virtues, Principalities, and Powers
The VIRTUES, [the usual translation of the name of this order of
angels as "virtues" is readily misleading if the old meaning of the
word "virtue" as "power" or "force", especially as regards to divine
beings (cf Oxford English Dictionary), is not remembered.
Colossians 1:16.

The eighth Choir of Angels: the Archangels
|
The Archangel Michael drives Satan into Hell.
Revelation 12:7.

The Archangel Raphael and Tobiah:
If you have ever been curious about what angels are really "like" do
read the book of Tobiah. The angel Raphael in human form accompanies
the young Tobiah and his dog on a quest on behalf of his father over a period of
several years. It is toward the end of their journey and return to
Tobiah's father, a devout Jew exiled in Nineveh, that Raphael identifies
himself as the Archangel Raphael "one of the seven who stand before
the Lord." This is the only book in the bible where the reader is able
to "look over the shoulder" of a bona fide angel as he moves in
human form
This is the passage where the Archangel identifies himself
Tobit 12:14.

Matthew 28:2

(28:2) Suddenly there was a mighty earthquake, as the angel of the
Lord descended from heaven. He came to the stone, rolled it back,
and sat on it.

Aingeal Cosantoir - Guardian Angel
That every individual soul has a guardian angel is not clearly stated
in the bible and has never been defined by the Church, and is, consequently, not an article of
faith; but it is the "mind of the Church", as St. Jerome expressed
it: "how great the dignity of the soul, since each one has from his
birth an angel commissioned to guard it." (Comm. in Matt., xviii,
lib. II).
Matthew 18:10

The Guardian Angels II
That every individual soul has a guardian angel is not clearly
stated in the bible and has never been defined by the Church, and
is, consequently, not an article of faith; but it is the "mind of
the Church", as St. Jerome expressed it: "how great the dignity of
the soul, since each one has from his birth an angel commissioned to
guard it." (Comm. in Matt., xviii, lib. II). .
