Seán Mac Seamas - John Jameson

Jameson Family Crest
Jameson Family Crest

Taken down by Patrick Lynch from Blind Billy O'Malley. In the title of this pretty and characterstic tune, the surname is given as James. But this is a very unusual surname in Ireland. In translating from the Irish, the surname would not be James but Jameson. This would therefore seem to be the correct name. The subject is probably John Jameson of Sligo. He had a sister named Mrs. Hamilton. He died in 1728 leaving five daughters... Dónal ÓSullivan

1. A Sheóin Mhic Shéamais, sé ar h-obair,
Is bí do mharcach sástaí,
Tuigidh tú gleacaigheacht, ionmhuin leat marcaigheacht,
Is cuingigh sin cos anáirde!

2. Réir mar mheasa ag fear atá críonna,
Is adhbhar saoghail agus sláinte
Marcaigheacht shúgach thabhairt di le duthracht,
Is beidh do chúrsa sástaí.

Chorus

3. Faisiun na Fraince do ghnáth a bheith raince,
Mar is mór a mholas na mná é,
Déan-sa mar súd é go h-éifeachtach súgach,
Is móide bheas cliú ort go bráth dhe.

4. An bhaintighearna is sgafanta, is múinte 's is galanta
Tháinic ar bharrain thar sáile,
Le buidéal, le bumper, le gloiní gan chuntas
Is ólam go fonnmhar sláinte!'
