Fear Conchubhair - Mr. O'Connor

Family Crest of O' Connor
O'Connor Family Crest

Maurice O'Connor was the head, in Carolan's day, of the O'Connors of Offaly. It will be noticed that the poem begins 'Uí Chonchubhair, míle slán leat' ('O'Connor, a thousand farewells to you'). This may be a mere poetical flourish. On the other hand, it is possible that the song was composed when Maurice O'Connor left Coote Hall, Co. Roscommon, for Cappagarrane, Offaly, and so withdrew himself from the district where Carolan was most at home.
