Bunch of Thyme

Bunch of thyme is a traditional Irish folksong but versions may also be found in Britain. It is closely connected with another song using symbols, "The Seeds of Love." In the present song, thyme is a symbol for virginity and chastity. (Loesberg III, 76).

Údar gan ainm
Taraigí béithe óg 's caomh
'S sibhse atá i mbláth bhur shaoil
Bí faireach 's coinnig do gharraí séimh
Ná lig d'aon fhear goidead bhur dtím

Curfá
Mar is rud luachmhar é an tím
Beireann tím gach rud chun m'intinn
Tím le bhlas'na ilghnéith', in éineacht len' áthas
Tím, beireann sé gach rud chun m'intinn

Bhí dornán tím agam uair
A cheap mé riamh nach meathadh
Ach tháinig mairnéalach drúisiúil de thaisme im' threo
'S ghoid sé mo dhornán tím uaim

Athuair Curfá

Thug an mairnéalach rós dom-sa
Rós nach meathadh anois ná riamh
Thug sé dom é chun a choinneáil im' chuimhne
An uair a thóg sé uaim mo thím

Athuair Curfá

Traditional
Come all ye maidens young and fair
And you that are blooming in your prime
Always beware and keep your garden fair
Let no man steal away your thyme

Chorus:
For thyme it is a precious thing
And thyme brings all things to my mind
Thyme with all its flavours, along with all its joys
Thyme, brings all things to my mind

Once I had a bunch of thyme
I thought it never would decay
Then came a lusty sailor who chanced to pass my way
And stole my bunch of thyme away

Repeat Chorus

The sailor gave to me a rose
A rose that never would decay
He gave it to me to keep me reminded
Of when he stole my thyme away

Repeat Chorus
