A Naomh Mícheál Árdaingeal

Michael the Archangel

On October 13, 1884, Pope Leo XIII collapsed after mass. His face was ashen and he had no pulse. It was not a stroke or heart attack.

In minutes he awakened and said: "What a horrible picture I just saw." I saw Satan and his angels fighting in the world for the ruin of souls. But later, I saw the Archangel Michael casting them into the abyss.*

The pope then composed the following prayer and had it recited from that day on after every low mass throughout the world. This continued until Vatican II revised the Divine Liturgy in 1969. The original Latin version is:

Sancte Michael Archangele, defende nos in praelio.
Contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto praesidium.
      Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur.
Tuque princeps militiae caelestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos,
      qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur
in mundo divina virtute in infernum detrude. Amen. (Papa Leo XIII)

Prayer to St. Michael

by Pope Leo XIII

Holy Michael the Archangel,
defend us in the battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil.
Rebuke him, O God, we humbly beseech thee;
and do thou, O Prince of the
heavenly host, by the divine power,
cast into hell Satan and
all the other evil spirits
who wander through the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

A Naoimh-Mícheál Árdaingeal
cosain sinn i n-am an chatha,
bí mar dhídean againn in aghaidh urchoírde
agus chealgaireachta an diabhail.
Go mbagruighidh Dia air, athchuinghimíd go humhal.
Agus dean-sa a cheannphuirt na sluaighte neamhdha an t-aidhbheirseoir céadna a theilgean síos síos go hifreann, tré chómhacht Dé, agus ina theannta sin na hainsoioraid eile atá ag imtheacht ar fuaid an domhain le fonn anamnacha a chuir i mbealach a gcaillte. Áméin.

"Then war broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels battled against the dragon, although the dragon and his angels fought back, they were overpowered and lost their place in heaven." Revelation 12:7.

"Ansin bhris cogadh amach sna flaithis, níor mhór do Mhícheál agus dá chuid aingeal troid leis an dragan. D’fhreagair an dragan agus a chuid aingeal an cath, 8ach ní rug siad bua, agus ní bhfuarthas a n-ionad sna flaithis feasta." Apoc. 12:7.

The feast of the Archangel Michael, also called Michaelmas day is celebrated in the church calendar on September 29th. Recently Gabriel and Rachial have been added to this feast.
